GRANITE VS. MARBLE
Marble and granite are both beautiful, highly sought-after surfacing materials extensively used in interior and exterior design. They are characterized by high resistance, timeless beauty, and versatility but each one does have its own attributes. So, what exactly is the difference, and which one should you choose? It all depends on the aesthetic you prefer and how much maintenance you’re willing to do. It all comes down to three aspects: geological, chemical, and aesthetic.
Geological
Marble and granite are both natural and quarried from the earth. Granite is an igneous rock, which means it was once molten and formed as it cooled deep within the earth. Marble, on the other hand, was once limestone that changed due to intense heat and pressure. To simplify the difference between marble and granite, we can say that while marble forms in the sea, granite forms inside the earth’s crust.
Chemical
Both stones possess very different properties. The biggest difference between granite and marble is their porosity. Marble is softer and more porous than granite. Granite, whose crystalline structure makes it more resistant to abrasion, staining, and discoloration, is in fact, the strongest of natural stones. It is tougher and more resistant especially to acid substances, scratches, wear, and atmospheric agents.
However, both marble and granite are heavy and relatively heat and scorch proof. Both stones can be stained by oily or intensely colored foods, so both require sealing every so often.
Aesthetic
The biggest difference between marble and granite lies in the aesthetic properties. Granite is characterized by the tiny flecks that appear throughout the stone and its color is determined by the variation in the percentage of minerals in the stone. Marble is considered more fascinating due to its irregular veins. Since both are created in nature, there can be drastic variations in color and pattern, and their appearance cannot be dictated as a rule. Both marble and granite make beautiful countertops, backsplashes, wall coverings, floor coverings, and more. They are both unique stones and can represent a very significant investment.
